The Small Grill is a perfect size for counter top use when space is at a premium. But don't be fooled, this little grill is pwerfull and extremely efficient and remains our most poplular grill.

Large konro Grill / Yakitori BBQ

£420.00

Made from Diatomite (the fossilized remains of plankton) and mined traditionally by hand in Suzu Japan, the blocks are joined together without the use of mortar, for a stronger, tighter and more fire resistant finish. The Konro is then baked at 1,000 degrees for six hours making them extremely durable.

Because Diatomite Grills have superior heat insulation properties, charcoal used in them starts easily and burns for longer....

It's composition and structure creates even heat distribution and very efficient cooking.

Chefslocker introduced the Japanese Konro Grill to the UK back in 2017 and we remain the largest supplier in the UK of authentic Kaginushi Konro Grills with the biggest selection of sizes, direct from the diatomite mine in Suzu Province.

After the earthquake in January 2024 many of the diatomite mines were devastated and with growing popularity, the original Japanese Konro became widely copied in China and the West but these are invariably not constructed of Diatomite.

Previously the Konro Grill had only been available in Japan and the US but Chefslocker soon became the largest supplier in Europe, trusted by Michelin Chefs and some of the best Kitchens in the World. Soon we were supplying MasterChef, The Great British Menu and Chef James Martin.

what is a konro grill
Capable of reaching an incredible 750c degrees internal temperature
It all started with Plankton...

Only the original Kaginushi Konro is made from *Diatomaceous Earth.
Carefully handcrafted at a handfull of mines in southern Japan, the Diatomite blocks are carved using traditional tools and skillfully assembled without the use of mortar in the same way as they have been for centuries.
* Diatomaceous earth was formed millions of years ago as a result of fossilized plankton. Rich in Silica, this rare and incredible material is the ultimate Insulator with superior heat retention.

Uniquely the original Konro grill has very thick walls and the interior is uniquely carved at an angle that deflects the heat back in on itself, effectively 'turning the heat back on itself' and maximising the temperature that can be acheived. Charcoal will also light quicker. Despite this the Konro is suprisingly light compared to any alternative due to the porous nature of the Diatomite

The preferred choice for Chefs... Due to the exceptional thermal insulation, food is cooked quickly without extreme heat, helping capture and preserve flavours. Grills made of this material have been used since the Edo period, when they were first used as room heaters.

Key Points

 - The Market is now flooded with 'Konro' style grills but these grills share little in common with the original Kaginushi Konro grill. They are mass produced and invariably made from a style of heat brick, not dissimilar can be bought from any builders merchant. - They are not made from Diatomaceous Earth -

- The Insulating properties of these Western grills are minimal compared to the diatomite used in the original Konro grill.

- The Material used in a Western style Konro Grill will not reach the sort of Teperatures that the Kaginushi grill can.

So Why Buy a Konro Grill?
When costings are more important than ever the combination of a konro grill & Binchotan Charcoal is an incredibly affordable way of cooking. Within a Konro grill the binchotan lasts for a very long time (upto 7hrs), you only need a very small amount and the Binchotan can be extinguished & reused.
For more Information - CLICK HERE -
Please note that due to the devastating 2024 Earthquake in the Noto Peninsular, Suzu Province many of the Diatomite mines were devastated and production of the Konro grills was halted. Much of the infrastructure in the area has now been rebuilt and late 2025 a small number of mines reopened, including the one at Kaginushi.
With demand always outstripping supply this has only made the matter worse, with certain models selling out fast. In 2026 we're confident the situation will improve and with one of the best supply lines in Europe you'll be the first to know when new stock is available.
